Are Oy and YIT Construction Ltd have entered into an alliance contract for the building technology work on the Suomenlinna tunnel. Repair work is already under way on the 1.3 km long tunnel, the project is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

“From the earliest stages Are demonstrated its capacity to work according to the alliance model and was enthusiastic about getting involved with the project. It’s great to get such a strongly committed partner for the project,” says Heikki Kuivaniemi, deputy project manager of the alliance from the Governing Body of Suomenlinna.

“Are has had very good experiences from earlier alliance project and we are therefore happy to be able to work on the Suomenlinna tunnel alliance contact. This project also provides us with valuable experience on repairing building technology in a tunnel that is in poor condition. I believe that thanks to the alliance model, the project will be implemented in a way that is agile and motivating for all parties,” says Kai Nurho, Area Director at Are.

In Are’s experience, the alliance model creates positive cooperation and prevents problems that typically occur at sites. When all of the parties are committed to a common goal, materials can be approved flexibly, resources can be used efficiently and financial benefits can be generated for the client and the implementing parties alike.

The Suomenlinna tunnel was completed in 1981 and is currently in poor condition. Water from leaks in the tunnel has caused corrosion of the technical systems, among other problems. The air conditioning and lighting are also in need of repairs. In the renovation project, the rock surfaces will be sealed and strengthened in order to reduce leakage and improve safety. The building technology used to maintain the tunnel will be completely replaced. In addition, the municipal engineering systems that flow through the tunnel will be centralised as part of the project.
