Are is taking Asokodit from oil to ground source heat – financed with the money saved

Are and Asokodit want to be at the forefront when it comes to energy efficiency and environmental friendliness. The project, which is one of Finland’s largest ground source heat projects for residential properties, has been easy to build on top of the previous co-operation.

Are’s agreement to convert the oil heating systems of Suomen Asumisoikeus Oy’s properties comprises 15 residential properties of different sizes in Uusimaa. The costs will be financed with the money saved through energy reductions resulting from the change. The project is one of Finland’s largest ever ground source heat projects for residential properties.

This is an important opening for Are and the model is also expected to be of interest to others. Are will cover the investment and maintenance costs of the project to be implemented in 2012. After the agreement period ends in around seven years, the equipment owned and maintained by Are will be transferred under the ownership of Asokodit.

– This is a substantial, interesting and challenging project for Are. We have been a forerunner in projects related to reducing properties’ energy consumption by making use of heat pump technology inretail premises, says Seppo Korhonen, Business Area Director at Are Group.

For the property owner, Are’s model is a cost-effective and effortless way of renewing the heating systems of residential properties to make them energy-efficient without investment expenses. When properties switch to renewable energy, expenses decrease substantially. Energy savings were attained immediately at the pilot site in Nummela, Vihti.

Are and Asokodit have been working together for a long time, and it was easy to follow up this co-operation. Are is responsible for the HPAC maintenance and technical service of over a half of the approximately 600 Asokodit right-of-occupancy homes. Energy saving is one of the major indicators of the cooperation’s success.

Green values were also an important factor for Asokodit. Asokodit is moving over to electricity produced with water and wind power, and wants to stop using oil altogether.

– Asokodit received good offers and chose Are. It was important for us to avoid having to make any major one-off investments. Environmental friendliness, distributing the expenses over several years and the previous good co-operation with Are counted for a lot. Are actively looked for a solution model that was perfect for us, says Matti Tarhio, Real Estate Director at Asokodit.

Asokodit is Finland’s largest owner of right-of-occupancy homes, and operates in 32 localities.
